Jez Butterworth's new play "The Ferryman" now playing in the West End direct from its @royalcourt run is an astonishingly powerful and darkly funny look at impact of Northern Ireland troubles and violence on a family caught in its cross-hairs. The writing and acting (by the largest cast of play I can recall) is masterful, such that it weaves a spellbinding tale that had me on the edge of my seat when I was not laughing.
I was totally enthralled with the transportive and beautiful immersive play "Ghost Light," the latest work from Third Rail Projects now playing at Lincoln Center's LCT3 theater. Anyone who loves theater is advised to see this enchanting piece brought to life by a terrific cast and some truly astounding staging logistics. It all runs like, and feels like, a dream.
It took me some time to get there, but I ultimately found Dominque Morisseau's new play "Pipeline" at Lincoln Center to be moving & resonant despite some writing flaws & dramatic excesses, including one entirely unnecessary character (Jasmine).
"Cost of Living" @MTC_NYC raises intriguing issues about human needs and desires but the writing & some of the acting lacks depth & nuance. The audience with which I saw this clearly liked this play more than I did.
#KimsConvenience @Soulpepper in NY is mildly entertaining, but too sitcom-like for my taste.
#JuliusCaesar the Public Theater's first 2017 Shakepeare In The Park offering, is urgent, current, well acted/staged & timely. Somewhat truncated, but wisely so, the contemporary political gloss given the show works well and fits the text like a glove. See it if you can.
A powerful, piercing & emotionally astute performance by Rebecca Hall anchors Claire Lizzimore's fine new play "Animal" at the Atlantic Theater Company. The opportunity to see Ms. Hall give this astounding performance in the intimate Atlantic Stage 2 should not be missed.
