NY Shows You May Want to Skip

While there are a number of highly recommended new shows on stage in New York right now (see recommendations in the right hand column of this site), I have seen a few new shows in New York recently that, in my opinion, are not worth the time or money.

"BIG FISH" on Broadway is a good example of how not to adapt a successful film into a musical.  It is overly busy and lacks anything approaching a genuine emotion.  Norbert Leo Butz is good in the lead role, but he seems to be in a different show than the other actors around him. For me, "Big Fish" was a big disappointment and a big waste of time.

Julie Taymor's and Theatre for a New Audience's take on "MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" (which I saw in previews), suffers from a similar lack of restraint and focus.  Perhaps this will improve in previews, but what won't likely improve are several key roles populated with actors unable to perform Shakespeare well.

Finally, I was underwhelmed by Nico Mulhy's new opera "TWO BOYS," at the Met, which lacked storytelling cohesion and seemed downright silly or overly creepy at times.  I think this is a noble effort by this young composer and the Met to tackle some thing new and different, but the show largely left me cold.  To be fair, opera is not my thing, but I was hoping for something more engaging (like my recent trip to the in incredible "Einstein On The Beach" @LA Opera.)

"AFTER MIDNIGHT" is Joyous Entertainment

KenderTheater (@KenderTheater)
"AfterMidnight" on Broadway is all that a musical revue should be- 90 minutes of non-stop joy. Fantasia and Adriane Lenox shine among this supremely talented cast.

A Beautiful & Moving "FUN HOME"

KenderTheater (@KenderTheater)
"FunHome" @PublicTheaterNY is a deeply moving, beautiful new musical based on the autobiographically inspired graphic novel of the same name by Alison Bechdel.  Another terrific new work from The Public.****

A Long, But Rewarding "EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH"

KenderTheater (@KenderTheater)
"Einstein On The Beach" @MusicCenterLA Dorothy Chandler Pavillion is hypnotic, beautiful and mesmerizing, although I have no idea what some of it was about. It lasts 4 and 1/2 intermission-less hours, and yet I could not take my eyes off the stage the entire time, and was fully engaged throughout.   Some of the music and visuals simply took my breath away.  I think it is meant to largely defy rational meaning, but even if not and much of it just went over my head, I still loved it.  I have never seen anything like it, and probably never will again.
