"Groundhog Day" Is Just Okay

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/27/17, 11:29 PM

"Groundhog Day" is a mediocre, mildly entertaining new Broadway musical, based on the film of the same name.  The show is too long and the music largely unmemorable, but Andy Karl in the lead role of Phil is fantastic & is THE reason to see this show.

Timely Themes Explored in "The Profane"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/26/17, 10:48 PM

Zayd Dohrn's "The Profane" is another very well written & staged world premiere play presented by Playwrights Horizons.  One is drawn in by the play's nuanced explorations of religion, tolerance & family ties, all of which gained considerable weight for me when I checked Wikipedia at intermission and learned the playwright's parents are well known Weather Underground leaders who hid from the law with him in his formative years.

"Daniel's Husband"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

"Daniel's Husband" at Primary Stages is an engaging & finely written play that reveals its surprising depth as its layers are slowly peeled away by its fine cast.  While it's themes are nominally gay related, larger universal themes sprout during the course of the play.

A Sublime, Emotionally Resonant "Sunday In The Park"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

If you can, get yourself quickly to the newly reopened & beautifully restored Hudson Theater where theatrical magic is being spun in the sublime revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday In The Park With George."  Perfectly cast throughout, this production is anchored by the virtuoso performances of Jake Gyllenhaal as Seurat and the outstanding Annaleigh Ashford as Dot.  Together their chemistry is off the charts, which adds dimension and depth to an already rich show.  This is the best and most emotionally resonant production I have seen of this beautiful and intricate musical, and the first one for me in which both acts are equally superb.

Lepage's "887" Disappoints

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

Robert Lepage's autobiographical one man show #"887" ‪@BAM_Brooklyn‬ was too long & self-indulgent for my taste.  Some of the staging is inventive, and Lepage once again displays his fascination with miniatures, but the limitations of a one person show are not transcended here.

Absurdity Abounds in David Byrne's "Joan of Arc" Musical

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

Jo Lambert is mesmerizing in the title role of "Joan of Arc" at the Public Theater.  Her supporting cast is also fine and there is some terrific music in the score.  But none of this can lessen the fact that the show itself is beyond absurd.  This production leads one to question whether "Joan" can be effectively musicalized in this day and age.

"Gently" Fails As a Drama

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/24/17, 7:59 AM

Martin Sherman's "Gently Down The Stream" at The Public Theater is dull, overly narrated, dramatically inert, predictable & unduly preachy.  Its saving grace is having Harvey Fierstein on stage again, even if he does little more than his regular schtick.

I Wish I Had Not Paid For This "Price"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/23/17, 2:47 PM

Roundabout Theatre's limp revival of Arthur Miller's "The Price" is a miscast & misdirected mess.  The inappropriate and inconsistent tone of this production saps this hard to perform play of its drama.  This is by far the worst revival of this show I've seen, and pales in comparison to the 2015 revival directed by the incomparable Irish director Garry Haynes at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum.

What The World Needs Now is "Come From Away"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

‪"Come From Away"‬ is an engaging & heart-warming new 9/11 themed Broadway musical that could be described as a crowd pleaser, but it earns that description.  Well illustrating that strength & compassion are welcome by-products of diversity, this is the anti-Trump musical we desperately need right now.

NT Live's Powerful "Hedda Gabbler"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/9/17, 10:20 PM

‪NT Live screening of the National Theatre's "Hedda Gabler" features a refreshing & powerful revival of Ibsen's classic (finely adapted  by Patrick Marber).  Ivo van Hove's brilliant direction makes this production feel current and urgent, bolstered by a thrilling lead performance from the always great Ruth Wilson.  I have seen multiple productions of "Hedda Gabler" over the years, but this was like seeing this play for the first time.

NEW BOOK- George Saunders' Exceptional "Lincoln In The Bardo"

KenderTheater (‪@KenderTheater‬)

3/4/17, 5:11 PM

#GeorgeSaunders' brilliant new novel #LincolnInTheBardo is outstanding - a finely tuned amalgam of historical & spiritual fiction.  Completely engrossing, this work and feels especially timely in the midst of our current political turmoils.  Highly recommended.
